Africa: Eliminating Food Waste through a Circular Economy
The circular economy is an economic model focused on eliminating waste and inefficiency and promoting greater resource productivity. The carbon footprint of wasted food is approximately 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere on an annual basis.  The shift to a circular economy is not only about managing waste—it presents a new economic paradigm for rethinking how we design, use, and reuse our resources (both products and services), with an estimated economic output potential of USD $4.5 trillion per year by 2030.  
The COVID-19 pandemic showed in many cases all the drawbacks of the present economic model- the linear economy (‘take-make-dispose’). Facilitated by Shared Value Foundation, join us at the B Corp Climate Summit on [Date + Time] to explore how long-term thinking that applies a circular economy lens could help establish a more resilient and sustainable business. 
The session will focus on:
  • What is the essence of applying circular economy principles in managing food waste?
  • How are businesses involved in food adopting circularity principles and business models to become more resilient over the long term?

During the first B Corp Global Climate Summit, we are thrilled to officially launch our Interdependence Coalition.

We’re setting out to transform how companies operate and how they are governed to contribute to an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economic system.

Success of the EU’s proposed Green Deal depends on businesses considering the planet as a stakeholder. Without a vibrant planet, we can not support healthy communities nor can sustain business. It is time for change.

Our objective is to make sure every company registered in the European Union aligns the interests of their shareholders and administrators with those of wider society and the environment by making it a pan-European directive.

Earlier this year, in partnership with The Good Lobby, B Lab Europe responded to the European consultation on Sustainable Stakeholder Governance and presented our position in a letter, signed by over 60 B Corps. There are many proposals underway in the EU that further the sustainability related path that the EU has set for its economy. These include proposals for regulations related to non-financial reporting, to investors’ duties and to due diligence in supply chains. These all need to be aligned for the fullest impact on our economy, society and planet.

The Interdependence Coalition is bringing together a broad and growing coalition of leaders from across all sectors and nations across the European Union to help deliver this new contract between business and society.

Africa: Plastics Leading Towards a Circular Economy
At the global, national and local level, there is increased action to address concerns around plastics in the environment. The circular economy approach in plastic waste management requires producers to take responsibility, save energy, design waste out of the system, and create a market for reuse.
In this session, we explore the role of plastics in our society and how existing recycling and reprocessing infrastructure can be improved and enhanced to capture and recycle more plastic waste; avoiding escape into the environment. 
Governments have imposed legislation and regulations that would, among other things, require extended producer responsibility and impose bans and restrictions on plastic products sales. We will explore the role of the private sector and the B Corp Movement in supporting the implementation of these regulations and importantly how such regulation can be used to drive innovation and change in the way businesses handle plastics after first use. 
Specifically, the session will aim to: 
  • Explore options to improve waste management, reduce plastic use and increase recyclability in the region;
  • Investigate the role of the private sector and B Corps in shaping and implementing plastics regulations;
  • Common challenges companies face in combating plastic waste, and how to overcome them; and
  • Opportunities for businesses to drive innovation and change in the way they handle plastics after first use.

The Gigatonne Challenge builds, supports and funds teams around the world who are reducing global emissions. Since October 2020, 48 teams and 700+ citizens from cities worldwide have taken part in the Gigatonne Challenge and together have abated 102.5 tonnes of CO2e emissions.

Currently, half of the world’s population is under the age of 30, with 90%of this age group living in emerging and developing economies and 50 percent unemployed or working and living in poverty. The aspirations and needs of young people, and their ability to meet their full potential, remain largely unmet due to stagnating economic growth and limited opportunities for advancement. Despite the odds being stacked against them, we know that when youth are empowered, development outcomes improve.
As the youth population continues to grow and make an impact, the business world is starting to see increased changes brought on by this target audience. Their energy, passion, and courage to challenge the status quo are needed to identify and address complex global problems, and their insights are worthy of attention and investment.
Today’s youth are demanding that companies practise good and ethical business that goes beyond lip service. They want businesses to be mindful of their impact on society and the environment. And while this snowballs, many major corporations are making some big changes to accommodate the needs of this revolutionary audience.

Join us in this panel discussion on regenerative agriculture as a tool to fight climate change.

The session will begin with an introduction to regenerative agriculture by Karin Hanzi, a leader in permaculture in Brazil, and by Dr. Silke Bollmohr, an environmental scientist with experience on the impact of conventional agriculture on health and environment. Shortly after this contextualisation, we'll start a panel discussion around the successes and challenges of B Corps implementing regenerative agricultural practises in the race to combat climate change. The panel will be composed by B Corps: Vava (Kenya), Endiro (Uganda), Guayaki (USA), Riverford (UK) and Tierra de Monte (Mexico). These five B Corps from different parts of the world will share their approach towards Regenerative Agriculture, and their vision for the future of Agriculture.

Complexity University and The Gigatonne Challenge Team invite you into an interactive workshop with members of our global community who are already hard at work tackling the climate crisis on the ground.
The Gigatonne Challenge builds, supports and funds teams around the world who are reducing global emissions.

Since October 2020, 48 teams and 700+ citizens from cities worldwide have taken part in the Gigatonne Challenge and together have abated 102.5 tonnes of CO2e emissions through local, innovative solutions.
We want to hear your vision of how we can take action together on climate change, with climate justice at the heart of solutions, and find out how our Gigatonne Teams can help you achieve it. Together we have the solution!

Join us to find out how the Gigatonne Challenge can be a delivery vehicle for the post-covid green recovery, addressing the climate challenge directly and creating livelihoods for those most affected.
Our workshop will start with an overview session - introducing the GT Challenge and hearing from some of our active team members, and quickly move into breakout sessions where we can all have a chance to ask questions and engage with each other more deeply.

Who should attend this session?
B Corps who are ready to support and catalyse active emissions abatement initiatives in their own community with a focus on equity, jobs creation and climate justice. We invite those who are actively curious about how to implement climate initiatives in their own communities or support those who are already working towards these goals.

Are you interested in furthering your climate action journey? In this session we will be discussing practical ways companies can move forward with a climate action plan through declaring a climate emergency and setting science based targets. The session will include information from Tourism Declares on how businesses can get involved, as well as a panel discussion with Legacy Vacation Resorts and Intrepid Travel. The discussion will focus mainly around why these two travel & tourism B Corps set science based targets, where they began their journey, what actions they have taken since, and what are some of the main challenges they have faced. The session will be interactive, including breakout rooms and a Q&A portion.
